# Policies

> Choose which checks run and how results are decided.

Each request names a screening policy in `policy`. The policy fixes which checks
run and the rules that set the recommendation, so your code never depends on
individual checks. We agree the policies you can use when we set up your
account.

| Policy | Use it for | Areas checked |
| - | - | - |
| `basic-onboarding` | A new customer at account creation | Restrictions, organization, scientist |
| `dna-synthesis-standard` | A customer before you ship to them | Everything in `basic-onboarding`, plus the address |

## What each area checks

| Area | Checks |
| - | - |
| Restrictions | Sanctions lists for the person and the organization, export-control lists and country restrictions. |
| Organization | Whether the organization appears in public registries, such as the Research Organization Registry (ROR), Wikidata and the Legal Entity Identifier index, whether it works in the life sciences, and whether public records, such as publications, ORCID and the email domain, link the person to it. A personal email address gives a note, not a flag. |
| Scientist | Whether the person has a record of life sciences research. |
| Address | Whether the address is close to the organization and in the country given, and whether it is residential or a mail drop such as a PO box. |

When registries and public records cannot settle an area, AI research searches
the web for cited evidence before the screening finishes.

## Fields each policy uses

Both policies use `customer.name`, `customer.email`, `customer.organization`,
`customer.country` and, when given, `customer.orcid`.
`dna-synthesis-standard` also uses `customer.shipping_address`, or
`customer.billing_address` when there is no shipping address. Without an
address, the address area is `not_checked`.

## Coming later

A later version adds an optional `order` object for order screening: your own
sequence screening result, the organism and the customer's intended use. You
will not need to change existing requests.
